What to do when it rains on the day of your photoshoot!

Let's set the scene!

You booked the photo-shoot months ago but had to keep putting it off due to illness and bad weather, so after the third or so reschedule you think; NO! This can't be put off again, what the heck can I do about this. In Dunedin, much like the rest of New Zealand, we are used to having 4 seasons in one day.  There have been times I have called off a shoot due to weather only to find 10 minutes later it is bright and sunny and we could have gone ahead.  On the contrast, I have had times where I show up, do a tonne of shoots, and 2 minutes after the last one the heavens flood over, and I am left trudging home, cold, wet and with dampened spirits.

Why are photographers so expensive | Prices, Prices and y'know...prices

I get it, we live in Dunedin, this tiny, cold and damp place where a huge portion of our population doesn't make all that much money. On top of that Dunedin has to have more photographers per capita than anywhere else I have ever lived.  Portrait and wedding photographers galore, commercial and fashion perhaps not so much but hey, maybe the clientelle doesn't really exist for that here (except it does!).

Giving up the things that are bad for you | caffeine withdrawls are killer

I knew I was ready to do this awhile ago, but with school and work, I just couldn't find the time and bad habits slipped back in.  Have you ever had that happen? Is it just me? I know it's not just me. Tell me it's not just me, haha, yup slightly neurotic today.

Planning for variety in a single space | Studio Shoot | Kopare Williams

Model Citizen does a lot of location shoots, but recently I found a studio space that I love and Kopare was the very first person I shot in it. Today I wanted to talk about how you can get variety in a single room while not resorting to changing your clothes every 5 minutes.

Fostering a sense of social conscience | Dunedin | Olivia and Hayden

Maybe I am being a tad overly sensitive, But it always seems as though America ramping up into an election campaign brings the worst out in people.  To a certain extent we can usually see this mirrored in the Kiwi elections as well and it always leaves me...well, to put it mildly- baffled!

Earthquakes, Epiphanies and Introversion | Kelsey | Rockbourne Gallery

Before we get into this one I have to warn you I am going come off as an egocentric, assholic, and opinionated prick. Generally I don't think I come across that way but every once and awhile it all comes spewing forth in torrents of vehement opinions, overwhelming feelings and an almost scary amount of "omg I could hurt you right now". It's been one of those days. It's actually be one of those days and then a couple more of them thrown in for good measure.

Part 2: Exercises for finding inspiration | Shyana

You know, the best thing about inspiration is that it doesn't have to be a big deal.  In this second part blog post that is following on from yesterdays (you can find that here) if you havent read it) Im going to let you know a few of the specific exercises I use to come up with bountiful ideas for photoshoots and creative thinking.

Finding Inspiration: The myth of motivation | Christiaan

In Brooke Shaden's book Inspiration in Photography she states that “…there are two types of inspiration. There is internal inspiration, which comes to us from our own experiences and perceptions of the world, and there is external inspiration, which comes from other people”[1].  Many artists choose to believe that the only, or best time to work are those very rare times when inspiration hits them, like a light bulb turning on in a dark room- artists who choose to believe this are limiting themselves. Waiting for inspiration as if it comes only from outside of ourselves limits artists to working only when it does come around; when if we know how to find it, inspiration can be found anywhere. Inspiration is not an all elusive concept that dangles like a prize just out of reach, artists are not Tantalus, perpetually reaching and never grasping the golden apple that is inspiration.

Personal Project number 1: Beauty at any age | Casting Call Dunedin

It's time to kick off 2016 with a bang and talk about something that I feel quite strongly about.  Beautiful images of beautiful women. Here's the thing, I want to celebrate every woman, I am often asked what my target market is and honestly the majority of the women who hire me are between the ages of 18-25 but i don't consider them to be my target market. Don't get me wrong I dont mind at all, but the whole idea behind my business was every woman is beautiful and I really feel that my target market is quite simply: female, yup if youre female its you! Sometimes I get messages asking if I will photograph someone because "I know you don't do older people but..." rubbish I don't shoot older people. I love shooting older people, I love shooting younger people and age really isn't a factor for me! I would be lying if i didn't say that it actually hurts when I see these messages in my inbox. So, I am doing something about it!

Change your reality in 2016 | It's Butt Kicking Time! 3 step process

Now that's a scary thought, 2015 went by so fast I can barely remember jan 2nd through to christmas, it's true our perception of time seeems to speed up as we get older. What are you going to do to improve on this last year gone? It's the time of year when people start thinking about resolutions and while I am not particularly one for "resolutions" I totally believe in setting goals and working towards them.  I know many people who have had incredibly bad years, and to be honest my year has had a few ups and downs itself.  But this isn't about goals or resolutions it's a butt kicking (that happens to involve choosing a new destination!)!

Will the real Model Citizen Please stand up! Why I do, that thing I do

Why do I do what I do?  One of my greatest beliefs is that there is beauty and perfection in everything.  Even when the world seems broken and sad we can find perfection in the smallest of things! I love working with people who do not seem to think they should be in front of the camera, want to know why? It's because I know withuot a doubt that every single person has something about them that should be explored and celebrated.

Ahhhh Christmas, the time of year when people need to unwrap manners!

It's that time of year isn't it folks!  Everyone goes a little crazy in the lead up to christmas, personally I find myself affected by the chaos that is surrounding me. Just a couple of days ago I found myself in the warehouse, strolling along looking for christmas presents for mr T, when a random woman felt it her right

Why you need a special mentality to be a model | Jasmine | The George Hotel | Christchurch

So you've decided you want to be a model, you've had a few shoots and everyone tells you how awesome you're doing and how amazing you look.  This is great for a short pick-me-up confidence boost isn't it!  And it's great if you only want to be doing it cos you have fun and know people with cameras who can take photos for you.  But thats not what being a model is all about.  We work with a tonne of aspiring models here at Model Citizen so I have a unique perspective on this whole thing.

F.A.Q What if I don't like my pictures

There is always some chance that when you have a photoshoot whether it is with Model Citizen Photography or anyone else that you may dislike the resulting images.  Sometimes it may have been an off day either for yourself or for me, othertimes it may just be a case of disliking yourself to the point you can't see the beauty that I did.

Scouts Motto: Be Prepared and how I learned this the hard way | Wallis Brothers | Dunedin

There is nothing more embarrassing that rocking up to a photoshoot assuming you are prepared and then it turns out you are not.  Ok, maybe that one time I was on a photoshoot walking across a bridge and my pantyhose rolled all the way down to my ankles, but that verged on mortifying rather than professionally embarrassing.  But these things happen to all of us at some stageannd if we don't learn from them and move on then what good are we to annyone, including ourselves!

Why Photographers Should Become Models Atleast Once

Photographers! This is one thing you could be doing that you probably don't that will help you get better at your craft.

It doesn't matter if you consider yourself highly professional, an amateur, a hobbyist or some other label for someone who uses a camera; yoou need to get yourself in front of a camera at some stage.  It teaches you all sorts of crazy stuff you never knew before and can help yu hone your skills.  Over the past few years I have had the great priviledge to shoot some of my competition (don't worry it was wwith a camera I promise), as well, I have been on the other side of the camera myself despite the fact I hate being in photos.  Why would I subject myself to this?  Because it makes me a better photographer. Here are a few of the ways it does so...

Why Photographers Should Become Models Atleast Once

Why Being Confident Is So Sexy

Being a photographer I see a lot of things and one I love to see is confidence. Easily captured with my camera, clients whose pores ooze confidence during a photoshoot display one of life’s most desired characteristics – sex appeal.

Do you really want to see every single image from your shoot? Hell NO!

One of the reasons I am paid to be a photographer is ofcourse my expertise, I am paid to cull your images (harsh word its true), and present the best of the best to you.  Now not only would I look like I don't do a very good job if I sent you every single bad image as well as all the good ones (dilution is a bitch), But the simple fact is there are just some pictures you don't need to see, and so it is my policy, and one that is never broken no matter how annoyed you get or how much begging ensues.

Read on to find out why...

How Glamour Shoots Boost Confidence | Amanda Marshall | 200 Riccarton

Those of us in the industry are still fighting against those scarily bad glamour images of the 80s!

Honestly, I couldn't fault anyone for not wanting one of those.  But if the internet has anything to teach us about glamour photos it is that they are probably the most misunderstood genres today.  Definitely not helped by those bad photos from the 80s, glamour photography doesnt have to be that way, trust me when I say that glamour can be some of the greatest images for helping you to boost your confidence.

Getting older and figuring out life

Not so long ago I celebrated my 31st birthday with my amazing friends and family and it occurred to me that I have the best life! I have friends who love me, a son who is awesome, my cats; Horus and Marceline, who make life interesting (even when they crap in my room-i still love you guys) and a business I absolutely adore at least 99.9% of the time. My life is far from perfect and it is something I am actively and with intent putting some effort into. What surprises me is that even tho life can hand me the occasional shit sandwich, I have far more confidence and vive to deal with said sandwich, pick myself up, dust myself off and move on.
