How Glamour Shoots Boost Confidence | Amanda Marshall | 200 Riccarton

Those of us in the industry are still fighting against those scarily bad glamour images of the 80s!

Honestly, I couldn't fault anyone for not wanting one of those.  But if the internet has anything to teach us about glamour photos it is that they are probably the most misunderstood genres today.  Definitely not helped by those bad photos from the 80s, glamour photography doesnt have to be that way, trust me when I say that glamour can be some of the greatest images for helping you to boost your confidence.

What is a glamour image or photoshoot?

Here is where glamour gets a little interesting, if you were to google glamour images you might get inundated with quite a bit of porn like stuff, and even wikipedia states that

Glamour photography is a genre of photography in which the subjects, usually female, are portrayed in erotic or exciting ways ranging from fully clothed to nude but in ways that either may conceal or may otherwise not especially draw attention to the subjects’ breasts and buttocks. Glamour photography is typically less explicit than pornography and erotica although the term may also be used as a euphemism for erotic photography. For glamour models right body shape and size is directly related to success.

I will fully admit that to some people and indeed an entire indusstry this is all that glamour photography is.  I would have to disagree and state that this is really only one very commercial side to glamour photos and hat to really figure out what glamour photography covers you need to dig a little deeper!

Glamour

noun
1. the quality of fascinating, alluring, or attracting, especially by a combination of charm and good looks.

2. excitement, adventure, and unusual activity: the glamour of being an explorer.

3. magic or enchantment; spell; witchery.

adjective
4. suggestive or full of glamour; glamorous: a glamour job in television; glamour stocks.

Yip, the dictionary definition of glamour pretty much nails it in one! The difference between glamour and say fashion then is simply that the focus is on you as the subject, not you modelling the clothes, lets face it, in this particular instance if the focus is on what you are wearing you are doing it wrong! Should the clothing bring out the best in you, yes, should it be stunning and add to the image, ofcourse, but should it be the centre of attention? no!

Why you are the focus of a glamour shot

With the focus being on you the very reason for shooting these images is to invoke a sense of glamour, you look stunning, youre in an amazing location and it is powerful, sexy and bold imagery.  Think sassy and fun! Boudoir by contrast, I find to be soft, romantic and a little on the vunerable side (but lets save that for another day).  Your presence is indeed what carries this type of imagery.

So how exactly does glamour photography boost my confidence?

Glamour photography highlights your beauty, and every woman (lets face it, it is usually women) is beautiful.  I have never met a woman who did not have something beautiful about her.  It is my job as a photographer to bring that out by the way.  One of the most important things I think any person having a photoshoot should remember is that it is my job to make you look good.  Now sometimes confidence can get in the way of you seeing jusst how beautiful you really are,  but trust me, if i say you look good you totally do!

Getting in front of a camera may be diffficult, in fact considering how often I want to do it myself I totally understand that getting in front of a camera may be something that is really dreaded for many people.  But it really does boost your confidence,  from having the courage to do it in the first place, to sseeing how amazing you can actually be.  Not to mention that when you fake it often enough it becomes true.

Everyone loves being told they look beautiful and stunning and being made to feel like a goddess.  And that is the upside of a glamour shoot, you get doted upon, it really is all about you, and there are no younger, sexier models to make you feel awkward if you book a full shoot, it is literally you, and me, maybe a makeup artist or assistant and thats it.  Ofcourse you may want to and are welcome to bring a friend along for support or even book in together to support each other!

You get to choose to do something only for you! In this day and age how offten do we do that? Everyone else always comes first!

Is a glamour session for me?

Possibly not, they arent for everyone, just like graveyard shoots or pin-up arent for everyone. But if you've been wanting to give it a go, like to have a bit of fun or have a secret dream to be a glamour model then they may just be for you.

As always you can contact us to discuss any qustions you might have.
