Let's set the scene!
You booked the photo-shoot months ago but had to keep putting it off due to illness and bad weather, so after the third or so reschedule you think; NO! This can't be put off again, what the heck can I do about this. In Dunedin, much like the rest of New Zealand, we are used to having 4 seasons in one day. There have been times I have called off a shoot due to weather only to find 10 minutes later it is bright and sunny and we could have gone ahead. On the contrast, I have had times where I show up, do a tonne of shoots, and 2 minutes after the last one the heavens flood over, and I am left trudging home, cold, wet and with dampened spirits.
Any time someone books a shoot, I hope for the perfect weather!
But sometimes, the world conspires against us, and it just doesn't happen...So, what do you do then? Here are some tips, that will help you get through...
Dress for the weather!
If you cannot reschedule, just go with it, coats and umbrellas can look super cute, I find that often people forget what is appropriate clothing when it comes to photoshoots specifically because they have spent all this money and they want to look their best, I get it. What I want is for you not to look so blue that I can't make you look human! By wearing a coat or jacket you have the option to at least put it on between shots.
Don't worry, Be happy!
Nothing lasts forever and this is especially true of the weather in Dunedin! We all know this, New Zealand is mostly a temperate climate and as such we have to work with what were given. Give me some happiness and I promise you the images will still be gorgeous! Just enjoy yourself, knowing you can go home to a nice cup of hot chocolate and a hot shower!
I might not look or even sound like I am doing at times, but I have been doing this awhile! I have had my fair share of photoshoots in the rain, or with impending doom on the horizon, the trick is not to worry about all the minor details and let me do my job. If we cannot get what we wanted we still have options, including a change of venue or rescheduling! I want you to love your images, and the best way for you to do that is by having a good time!
having a backup plan in place is a good idea, if you really don't like the idea of getting wet, or not getting the warm, sunny soft images you had in your head then this is a must, have an indoor location as a backup, or at a minimum a place with a lot of trees, or even somewhere with an outdoor platform like the railway station.
You have nothing to lose by continuing to do your shoot in the rain; if you don't let it dampen your spirits, If we don't get anything you love, and there is absolutely nothing that you would want to purchase, then I will reschedule a new shoot for you at no extra cost...one where the weather will hopefully do the right thing :)
Ying took part in this photoshoot, late last year in relentless rain, it was cold, it was damp, and it was incredibly fun. While being a tad soggy isn't fun in the long run, sometimes it makes for a different experience, and that's what life is all about!
